Defending lightweight champion Katie Taylor beaten in Rio 2016 quarter-finals

Mira Potkonen beats Katie Taylor at the quarter-final stage of Rio 2016 to end the Ireland native's hopes of back-to-back lightweight golds.

Ireland's defending lightweight champion Katie Taylor has suffered defeat to Mira Potkonen of Poland in the quarter-finals of Rio 2016.

The 30-year-old's bid for back-to-back Olympic golds fell at the first hurdle by virtue of split-decision after a closely-fought battle.

Taylor, given a bye to this stage, had to endure a number of big punches in the opening round in front of a large Irish contingent.

Potkonen continued to throw blows in the second, but Taylor showed good movement to avoid the onslaught and also managed to edge the third round.

The judges awarded the victory to Potkonen, however, leaving Taylor stunned inside the ring and Ireland with just one remaining hopeful in Michael Conlan who is in action tomorrow.
