Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Denesh Ramdin fight back on day one

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Denesh Ramdin help West Indies from 85-5 to 289-6 at the close of play on day one of the third and final Test match against New Zealand.

New Zealand have reduced the West Indies to 289-6 at stumps on the first day of the third and final Test match in Hamilton.

The hosts currently lead 1-0 after victory in the second Test in Wellington, with the first Test being drawn because of rain.

It could have been far worse for Ottis Gibson's side, who made a good start by getting to 72-1 in the morning session, but were decimated in the hour after lunch.

Kraigg Brathwaite (45), Kirk Edwards (6), Marlon Samuels (0) and Narsingh Deonarine (2) all fell to leave the tourists 86-5.

However, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Denesh Ramdin staged a remarkable recovery by putting on a 200-run partnership, with the latter reaching 107 from 148 balls before being caught by BJ Watling off the bowling of Corey Anderson.

The 23-year-old from Auckland finished with figures of 3-25 from 14 overs.

Chanderpaul (94) will resume at the crease with captain Darren Sammy (0).
