ECB ban Danish Kaneria for life, Mervyn Westfield issued with five-year ban

The ECB issue a lifetime ban from cricket to leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, while Mervyn Westfield is hit with a five-year ban.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have issued a lifetime ban from cricket to Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

The decision has been made following the bowler's involvement in a spot-fixing case from a match in 2009, where he was playing for Essex alongside convicted Mervyn Westfield in a 40-over contest against Durham.

Kaneria was found guilty by the ECB on two charges for encouraging Westfield to deliberately concede 60 runs in return for money.

A statement released by the ECB said: "We regard Danish Kaneria as a grave danger to the game of cricket and we must take every appropriate step to protect our game from his corrupt activities.

"Accordingly, we are unanimously of the view that the only appropriate sanction in relation to both charges is one of suspension for life and that is the sanction we impose. This means from today Danish Kaneria is suspended from any involvement in the playing, organisation or administration of any cricket under the jurisdiction of the ECB."

Meanwhile, Westfield, who pleaded guilty to corruption charges, has been given a five-year ban from cricket.
