Arsene Wenger is in favour of introducing spending controls to the Premier League, saying it will "determine the real size of clubs".

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given his backing to the introduction of spending controls in the Premier League.

Clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City have recently benefited from the financial power of their mega-rich owners, while Wenger's Gunners have had to work with a more restricted budget.

The Frenchman believes that the introduction of similar legislation to UEFA's financial fair play rules would help "determine the real size" of the Premier League's elite.

"You should just get the resources you generate, that will determine the real size of the club," he said.

"I personally am a long-time defender of financial fair play because I believe in the strength of purely football."

Arsenal have begun the season unbeaten, triumphing 2-0 over Liverpool last Saturday following consecutive goalless draws against Sunderland and Stoke City.
