Roma reportedly weigh up a move for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira after talks over a move for Granit Xhaka broke down.

Roma are reportedly eyeing a move for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguay international fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta during the 2019-20 season and was shipped out on loan to Atletico Madrid, where his fortunes did not improve either.

Torreira started just three La Liga games under Diego Simeone and was strongly linked to a return to South America with Boca Juniors following the death of his mother.

However, a return to Serie A has also been mooted for the former Sampdoria man, and Calciomercato now claims that Roma boss Jose Mourinho would be keen to welcome him back to Italy.

Relations between Arsenal and Roma are not thought to be rosy, though, with the two clubs locked in talks over Granit Xhaka before a move broke down due to Roma's reluctance to pay the Gunners' £20m asking price.

Torreira, who has also been linked with the likes of Lazio and Fiorentina, has just under two years to run on his deal at the Emirates, where he boasts four goals and six assists from 89 appearances in all competitions.

Despite his troubles, the 25-year-old was selected in Uruguay's squad for the Copa America and featured in three group matches before his side's quarter-final exit to Colombia.
