Charlton move eight points clear at the top of League One with a win over MK Dons while Sheffield United climb above rivals Wednesday into the second automatic promotion spot.

Charlton Athletic extended their lead at the top of the League One table to eight points with a 2-1 win over ten-man MK Dons at the Valley tonight.

Johnnie Jackson scored two penalties for the Addicks before Dean Bowditch pulled one back for the visitors, but Chris Powell's side hung on to record a 20th league victory of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday dropped out of the automatic promotion places after losing 1-0 to Stevenage at Hillsborough.

To make matters worse for the Owls, they are replaced in second spot by fierce rivals Sheffield United, who beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 courtesy of Neil Collins's early header.

At the other end of the table, Chesterfield climbed off the bottom following a 1-1 draw with Bury. It was so nearly all three points for John Sheridan's side but Steven Schumacher's strike two minutes from time snatched Bury a point.

The Spireites are replaced at the foot of the table by Rochdale, who went down 1-0 to Scunthorpe United. Garry Thompson's 66th minute strike was enough to earn the Iron the win and move them out of the relegation zone.

Wycombe fall into the bottom four after losing 3-2 at home to Yeovil Town while Graham Westley chalked up his first win as Preston North End boss as they beat Hartlepool United 1-0.
