Ipswich Town edge out Charlton Athletic

Tommy Smith's fifth-minute header gives Ipswich Town a 1-0 win against Charlton Athletic in the Championship.

Ipswich Town have squeezed past Charlton Athletic in the Championship with a 1-0 win at The Valley.

Tommy Smith's fifth-minute strike gave the visitors the lead when he headed home Aaron Cresswell's cross.

Mick McCarthy's side peppered shots at Ben Alnwick early in the Charlton goal but found the keeper in good form.

First the goalkeeper parried away an effort from David McGoldrick and then saved from Luke Chambers.

Charlton were furious late on when play was halted for a foul on Yann Kermogrant despite his pass laying in Cameron Stewart.
