Andy Cole has suggested that his former international teammate Rio Ferdinand should be given a role in the England set-up after the Under-21s' exit from the European Championships.
Gareth Southgate's Young Lions suffered a 3-1 defeat to Italy on Wednesday evening, which meant that they failed to progress from the group stage.
Cole, who played with Ferdinand for Manchester United and England, believes that the 36-year-old would command respect from England's younger players.
Cole wrote on his Twitter account: "A lot of people saying poor management?! Who would you want in charge? Is it the FA too political in their manager choice?!
"England and the FA need bit more character. Think outside the box! Step forward Rio Ferdinand - younger generation can relate to him!"
Ferdinand announced his retirement from professional football last month.
