Roy Hodgson targets England victory against Ukraine

Roy Hodgson says that England will go for the win against Ukraine on Tuesday.

England manager Roy Hodgson has insisted that his side will go for the win when they meet Ukraine on Tuesday.

A point against the co-hosts would be enough to seal the Three Lions' qualification to the quarter-finals after they came from behind to beat Sweden 3-2 in their last match. However, the former West Bromwich Albion boss isn't willing to settle for a draw in Donetsk.

"Our aim is to take the initiative like I thought we did for a very long period against Sweden," said Hodgson. "If you sit back and give the initiative to the opposition then you can't be surprised when they take it.

"There is the obvious pitfall that you could be tempted into trying to shut up shop and drop deeper and deeper only to find that in the last minutes of the game your opponents get a lucky goal, get given a penalty or a wide free-kick gets deflected into your goal.

"We will be trying to make sure we take the initiative but Ukraine will be trying to do the [same] and that is what makes this a fascinating game of football."

The winners of Group D will face Italy in the last eight, while the runners-up will play the defending champions Spain.
