Leeds United fail with bid for Chesterfield defender Liam Cooper

Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner reveals that Leeds United have failed with a bid to sign defender Liam Cooper.

Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner has revealed that the club has turned down a bid from Leeds United for defender Liam Cooper.

The 22-year-old joined the Spireites from Hull City in January 2013 following a loan spell at the Proact Stadium.

With a number of clubs thought to be keen on the youngster, Turner has confirmed that a recent offer from Leeds was rejected by the League One club.

"We have turned down an initial bid which was below our valuation of Liam and we now await a response from Leeds," he told Chesterfield's official website. "I'm not surprised that there has been interest in Liam because he is a quality player.

"[Manager] Paul Cook has assembled a squad of players who are capable of playing in League One and above and it would be a surprise if none of them attracted interest from other clubs."

Cooper scored three goals in 48 games last season.
