Half-Time Report: Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke give Aston Villa lead over Liverpool

Aston Villa find themselves 2-1 up against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.

Aston Villa are currently holding onto a 2-1 lead over Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League, thanks to first-half goals from Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke.

Gabriel Agbonlahor looked to set Villa on their way in the opening minutes when he struck a right-footed shot towards goal having been played in by Benteke.

Liverpool appealed for a penalty when Steven Gerrard's free kick was turned away at the back post by the arm of Leandro Bacuna, although the referee waved play on.

Weimann looked to test Simon Mignolet in the 17th minute as the visitors threatened on the counter, but the striker dragged his shot wide of goal.

Ciaran Clark was given far too much room as he evaded Kolo Toure and Glen Johnson to meet a corner with a header, which thumped back against the base of the Liverpool post.

Villa took the lead in the 25th minute when Gabriel Agbonlahor got past Toure before driving the ball into the box, where Weimann was waiting to tap home.

The visitors increased their lead in the 36th minute as Agbonlahor's cross evaded both Jonhson and goalkeeper Mignolet, leaving Benteke all alone to head into an empty net.

Liverpool were able to pull one back right on the stroke of half time after Jordan Henderson played in Daniel Sturridge, who converted from the centre of the box.
