Good morning! Thank you very much for joining
Sports Mole for today's match as
Thailand host Liverpool at the Rajamangala National Stadium. Let's get straight down to business.
We'll start by looking at Liverpool, and it is fair to say that their pre-season has been dominated by events off the field. The
Luis Suarez saga still rumbles on, and Liverpool are remaining firm in their negotiations, refusing to sell the wantaway striker for any less than £50m.
On the field, though, Liverpool have been quietly going about their business. A 4-0 win over Preston North End began their warm-up campaign before they embarked on this Far East tour, on which they have kept up their 100% record with wins over Indonesia XI and, in their last outing, a 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory.
Today marks the Reds' final game of the tour before they head back to England to continue their pre-season preparations. First up for them after this match is
Steven Gerrard's testimonial against Olympiakos before matches against Valarenga and Celltic.
One constant throughout the tour so far has been the incredible support Liverpool have received wherever they have played. Over 95,000 fans packed out the MCG for their match against Melbourne Victory, producing a spine-tingling atmosphere. Despite today's match being in Thailand's national stadium, it is once again expected to be an overwhelmingly pro-Liverpool crowd.
TEAM NEWS: Liverpool's team news is in, and unsurprisingly it is Luis Suarez who makes the headlines. He is again left out of the starting lineup as he looks to get back to full fitness following his extended leave. Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure are chosen as the centre-back partnership, while Gerrard and Coutinho start in midfield. Full team news coming right up.
LIVERPOOL STARTING XI: Mignolet; Enrique, Agger, Toure, Johnson; Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, Coutinho; Aspas, Borini
LIVERPOOL SUBS: Jones, Skrtel, Kelly, Flanagan, Suarez, Spearing, Wisdom, Robinson, Henderson, Alberto, Downing, Sterling, Ibe, Coates, Assaidi, Ward
So, what can we make of that side? Well, first things first it is important not to read too much into the absence of Suarez. The Uruguayan was always unlikely to start this match due to his extended holiday following the Confederations Cup. He will play some part, perhaps coming on at half time or shortly after the break. Elsewhere it is a strong side selected by Rodgers. The midfield of Lucas, Allen, Gerrard and Coutinho is likely to be his first choice throughout the coming season, while Aspas is also likely to play a fairly big role in the early stages due to Suarez's suspension.
Mignolet is now the undisputed number one at the club following Pepe Reina's loan move to Napoli, while Enrique, Agger and Johnson are three of Rodgers's first choice defenders. Only Toure and Borini, then, are unlikely to start the season opener against Stoke.
Let's turn our attention to Liverpool's opponents today. They meet a Thailand side who aren't in great form. Their last outing did see them thrash China 5-1 but, before that, they were beaten 5-2 by Lebanon, 1-0 by Qatar and 3-1 by Kuwait.
Sandwiched between those results was a 2-0 win against the lowly Faroe Islands, but they haven't won a competitive game this year. They currently sit bottom of their Asian Cup qualification group with 0 points and they also finished bottom of their World Cup qualification group, amassing just four points.
However, they did manage to reach the final of the ASEAN Championship - a tournament for the lower ranked Asian teams -last year. They finished top of a group containing the Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar before beating Malaysia in the semi-finals. They couldn't go all the way, however, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Singapore in the final.
It is safe to say that they are not one of international football's giants, then. However, they do have the slight advantage of fitness on their side. While Liverpool are still looking to return to match fitness, the Thai league is currently in full swing, so their players should be raring to go today.
We have seen what difference fitness can make in the pre-seasons with the likes of Manchester United. They are also on a Far East tour and are not having the best of times. They have struggled to match the work rate of a number of their opponents, falling to two defeats and one draw in four games.
Having said that, I don't think there are many people expecting Thailand to spring a shock today. Liverpool have looked sharp enough in pre-season to suggest that they will win this one comfortably enough, especially with the strong team that Rodgers has selected.
Rodgers has tended to use a lot of subs during this pre-season campaign so far, and I expect nothing different today. The likes of Sterling, Ibe, Downing, Alberto and Henderson - as well as a certain Luis Suarez - will almost certainly play a part in this match.
Rodgers may also look to give Skrtel and Wisdom another run out in defence. He has tended to stick with partnerships rather than mixing and matching in central defence, which suggests that Skrtel and Agger may not be playing alongside each other much this season.
PREDICTION: We're five minutes from kickoff in Thailand, which means that it is about time I made my prediction. I can't see past Liverpool winning this one. It won't be a goalfest, but I doubt the Reds will have to move into top gear to win today. I'll say 3-0 to Liverpool.
Of course, plenty of eyes will be on Suarez today. His reaction - or lack thereof - to setting up a goal in Liverpool's match against Melbourne Victory created a lot of fuss, confirming to many that he isn't happy at the club. The Reds simply don't seem ready to sell, though, and it doesn't look like they will budge until their valuation is met.
There is more great support in this stadium, and another hair-raising rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is currently ringing around the packed stadium.
KICKOFF: Liverpool get us underway in this match, playing in their new away kit as Thailand are in their usual red.
A decent start from Liverpool sees them make early headway down the right, but a couple of crosses are comfortably cut out.
Liverpool make a couple of lazy clearances, gifting the ball right back to Thailand twice in quick succession, but the hosts can't take advantage.
A hint of an opening for Liverpool as Coutinho turns his man and threads a ball through to Borini, but his cross is plucked out of the air with Aspas lurking.
Anan has Thailand's first shot of the day, but it is comfortable for Mignolet. The ball just bounced in front of the new Liverpool keeper, which could have made it more difficult, but he still collected it with ease.
CHANCE! Aspas does well to find Coutinho before racing into the box for the return pass. He tries to swing it into the far corner with a first-time effort, but it deflects off Joe Allen and behind for what should be a goal kick, although the ref points for a corner.
Half-chance for the visitors as Coutinho's delivery is left by Aspas for Gerrard, who is steaming in at the back post. His first touch is slightly heavy, however, and Thailand are able to clear.
Coutinho goes for a spectacular acrobatic volley, but it is reassuring to see that Brazilians can get it wrong too! The ball is closer to hitting his knee than his foot and he skews his ambitious effort well wide.
Johnson clips a clever ball into the box and Borini steals in just in front of the keeper, but his slight touch isn't enough to take the ball past Hathairattanakool, who has made a good start to this match.
GOAL! Thailand 0-1 Liverpool (Philippe Coutinho)
That goal has been coming, and it is a piece of individual brilliance from Coutinho. He picks up the ball in midfield and weaves his way past two Thailand defenders before checking back past another and sending the keeper the wrong way as he nestles his effort into the bottom corner. Lovely goal from the 21-year-old.
Thailand have responded well to going behind. They are enjoying their best spell of the match so far and, for the first time, Liverpool are being forced into a prolonged spell of defending.
There is a great atmosphere in this stadium, as there has been throughout this tour. There hasn't been a moment of silence from the stands so far. Great to hear during a friendly.
Thailand's approach play isn't actually too bad, they just seem to panic when they reach the final third. Liverpool are happy enough to give them possession in the middle of the park, but as soon as they get within 30 yards of Mignolet's goal, they apply the pressure to try to win the ball back.
CLOSE! Teerasil almost levels the sides with a fine piece of attacking play. Lucas gives the ball away and Teerasil picks it up on the edge of the area. His first touch puts it on to his stronger left foot and he manages to bend a shot goalwards despite close attention from Agger and Allen. It is a good effort, but whistles just past the post.
Thailand are on top at the moment and have been since the goal. Liverpool haven't threatened in an attacking sense since Coutinho's strike gave them the lead, and Rodgers will be keen to get them back to how they were playing when the scores were level.
The visitors can't keep hold of the ball for any length of time and Thailand just keep coming forward. They aren't exactly threatening Liverpool's goal other than that Teerasil effort, but they will be pleased with their reaction to going behind.
Liverpool have 11 men inside their own half right now, which is very strange to see considering the opposition. You have to wonder whether this is a deliberate tactic to just sit off and conserve energy for a while or whether they are simply being outplayed at the moment.
Coutinho has a slight glimpse of goal but he is quickly closed down. He perhaps should have taken that first time instead of taking a touch which allowed the defence to block his eventual shot.
SAVE! Very good save from Mignolet! The keeper deals with an initial corner very well, punching it clear, but the ball eventual bobbles to a Thailand man on the edge of the box. He hammers his effort goalwards and it takes a slight deflection on the way through, which makes Mignolet's flying save even more impressive.
The camera has just panned across Liverpool's subs bench, and there is plenty of talent to bring on if Rodgers want. Not least Suarez, who is currently biting his nails, as many Liverpool fans will be doing over the Uruguayan's future.
Gerrard almost sets Borini through on goal but the Liverpool striker is again crowded out and Thailand get it clear. He has been the main focal point of Liverpool's attack so far, but he is yet to show that he can lead the line on his own.
Aspas turns his man well but his low cross is well read and intercepted by the defence, who are dealing with Liverpool very comfortably at the moment.
Coutinho, Aspas and Gerrard combine to create another hint of an opening, but once again the defence make it difficult for Liverpool. Gerrard manages to squeeze a cross in with very little space to work with, but it is too long and goes out for a throw in.
It is interesting to see Allen bursting forward on a number of occasions in this match. He is making late runs into the box that you would usually expect Gerrard to make, which may point to a slight switch in roles between the two.
HALF TIME: Thailand 0-1 Liverpool
The referee brings the first half to an end, and it is one that Liverpool will be fairly content with. They began very well and Thailand struggled to cope with their free-flowing football early on. They took the lead through Coutinho's fine solo effort in the 16th minute, but have faded a bit since that goal.
Thailand responded to going behind very well and were probably the better team after Coutinho's strike. They came close through Teerasil but, other than that, haven't been able to turn their pressure into chances.
Still, Liverpool can take plenty of positives from that half of football. Coutinho looks sharp, and their defence has held firm having been asked some serious questions. There is, however, plenty of room for improvement too.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a few subs at the break, although it shouldn't be on the same scale as some of the other matches on this tour. Rodgers has said that more players will play the full 90 minutes today, but he still has plenty of talent on his bench to bring on. The likes of Ibe, Sterling and Suarez could add a much-needed injection of pace and inspiration to this one.
Speaking of Suarez, it will be very interesting to see how many minutes Rodgers gives him today. He had 20 minutes against Melbourne Victory, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him come on at the break.
It will also be interesting to see what sort of reaction he gets from the Liverpool fans. The longer his transfer saga drags out, the more impatient the supporters seem to be getting with the Uruguayan. They feel that he is showing a lack of loyalty in trying to push a move, but each one of them will still be delighted if he is still at the club next season.
Thailand will be buoyed by their performance in the first half, particularly after they went behind. They forced a very good save from Mignolet and had an effort flash just past the post in the first half, so they will believe that they can score in this match.
The conditions could well be playing a part in this match. It is swelteringly hot with humidity levels hitting 90%. That is not easy to play in for anyone, but the Thai players will be more used to the conditions.
The teams are back out on the field and we're ready to go again here.
KICKOFF: Thailand get us back underway, can they pick up where they left off in the first half?
There doesn't appear to be any subs for either side at half time, which is interesting. I expected Rodgers to make a couple for sure.
Adisak makes a good run down the left, skipping past Johnson before zipping a ball across goal, but Teerasil just can't make contact with it.
GOAL! Thailand 0-2 Liverpool (Iago Aspas)
Liverpool hit Thailand on the break, and Coutinho is heavily involved again. He turns provider this time, feeding the ball into Aspas, who takes it into his path with a lovely turn. That first touch sends him clear through on goal, and his next touch sees him slide it underneath the keeper.
Thailand have made a number of bright bursts into the box in this match, but they don't quite have the close control and slick passing to find a way through the crowded area.
Coutinho spins away from his man again before sending another incisive pass through. This time it is just too heavy, however, and the Thailand keeper is out quickly to act as a sweeper keeper again.
PENALTY SHOUT! Coutinho is running this game at the moment. He slips another good pass into the area where Borini collects it. He tries to take on his man and goes tumbling over a hanging leg, but the referee waves it away. On first glance it looked like a credible claim, but the replay shows that the ref got that decision right.
Liverpool have done well not to take their foot off the pedal since their second goal. They let up after their opening goal and allowed Thailand back into the game, but they are in complete control now.
GOAL! Thailand 0-3 Liverpool (Steven Gerrard)
That is a lovely finish from Gerrard, but Aspas deserves credit too. The Spaniard is almost played through on goal but the pass is slightly wide, causing him to take a touch before pulling it back to Gerrard, who produces a cute little dink to send it over the diving keeper. Very smart finish.
LIVERPOOL SUB: Here he comes! Luis Suarez enters the field to a huge ovation, along with Jordan Ibe. Still no smile from the Uruguayan.
THAILAND SUB: Thailand make a change of their own as Wannasri makes way for Pinyo Inpinit. That is a very attacking change from the hosts.
Thailand have a free kick in a decent position here. It is right on the edge of shooting range... but they take it quickly and it is easy for Mignolet. That is a waste.
LIVERPOOL SUB: Another double change for Liverpool as Martin Skrtel replaces Kolo Toure, while
Philippe Coutinho makes way for Jordan Henderson. Coutinho has been very impressive today.
OFF THE BAR! Suarez so nearly makes it 4-0. Gerrard whips a fine free kick towards the near post and the Uruguayan rises highest to nod it goalwards. It is a decent header, but he just gets a little too far under it, which sends it crashing against the bar. He probably should have scored there.
CHANCE! Liverpool miss another fine chance to make it 4-0! Suarez gives the ball to Ibe, who shows good strength to hold off the full-back and clip a decent ball in with very little space to work with. Henderson gets on the end of it, but the Thailand keeper gets across well to make a good save before the defence scramble it clear.
Worth a go from Gerrard, but his long-range effort goes flying over the bar. Suarez picks it up from a throw in and plays it square for his skipper, who tries a first-time strike while off balance. It would have been some goal from there, but he couldn't keep it down.
Some nice football from Liverpool sets up another half chance. Gerrard is heavily involved once again, and his final ball - an attempted back heel - deflects into the path of Ibe, who lashes his shot into the side netting. The youngster should have tried to go across goal with that shot.
YELLOW CARD! In a competitive game, this would be a red card, but Pinyo gets away with a yellow as it is a friendly. Suarez lifts the ball over the top for Henderson to race on to but Pinyo, who is the last man, is tugging away at his shirt to halt the midfielder's progress.
LIVERPOOL SUB: Luis Alberto will get a 10-minute run out here, replacing Joe Allen who has been impressive today. He has got forward a lot more than usual.
Suarez collects the ball on the edge of the area and immediately spins to face goal before looking to curl on in to the top corner. It is a good, if ambitious, idea, but he can't get enough bend on the ball and it goes a couple of yards wide.
Mignolet makes a comfortable stop from a long range effort. Liverpool are still yet to concede a goal in pre-season, which will be a stat that will please
Brendan Rodgers no end.
Thailand are making a steady flow of subs at the moment, too many to keep up with to be honest! They know this game is over and the manager now seems to be trying to give as many of his players the experience of playing against Liverpool as possible.
The crowd are cheering wildly every time Suarez even gets near the ball. They are still fully behind the striker despite his prolonged transfer speculation.
OFF THE BAR! This really should be 4-0 now, and it is Gerrard who is guilty of missing a great chance. He is in acres of space with only the keeper to beat, but he hits it straight at Hathairattanakool when he really should have scored. The ball comes back out to the skipper and he tries to lift it over the keeper, but his effort comes off the underside of the bar before being cleared. It was a much better second effort, but he should have scored one of them.
FULL TIME: Thailand 0-3 Liverpool
A comfortable win for Liverpool then, and they maintain their 100% pre-season record. Goals from Coutinho, Aspas and Gerrard gave the Reds the victory, and it could have been even better as they hit the bar twice. There is still room for improvement, but Rodgers will be pleased with what he has seen today.
That's all from me this afternoon. Thank you very much for joining
Sports Mole for what was a fairly routine victory for Liverpool. I will leave you with Matt Law's
match report. Goodbye!
