Gary Neville says that Manchester United fans were in shock when Nani was 'wrongly' sent off during the Red Devils' Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has revealed that a sense of shock filtered through the fans at Old Trafford when Nani was given his marching orders against Real Madrid.

The North-West outfit were knocked out of the Champions League by the Spanish giants courtesy of two goals which came after the Red Devils went down to 10 men following Nani's dismissal.

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir issued the Portugal international with a red card, which enraged manager Sir Alex Ferguson, following a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa.

Neville wrote on Twitter: "Been going to OT since age of 5 and I've never seen the whole ground as in disbelief as they were last night at a decision!

"Nani is a player who regularly tries to control a pass like this over his shoulder and its never a red card! Changed the whole game!Poor ref.

"The crowd actually weren't angry / weren't shouting they were just open mouthed and in shock!"

Ferguson and his players refused to speak to the media following the defeat.
