Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho suggests that he is facing a defensive injury crisis ahead of Sunday's trip to Liverpool.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that he is facing a defensive injury crisis ahead of Sunday's trip to Liverpool in the Premier League.

United rounded off their Champions League group-stage campaign a 2-1 defeat to Valencia on Wednesday night.

Mourinho made a number of changes to his starting XI, but the United manager has revealed that he had limited options with Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Matteo Darmian, Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot all unavailable.

Whether any or all of the five players mentioned will be available for the trip to Liverpool remains to be seen, while there is also uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Luke Shaw.

"Chris Smalling is injured, Victor Lindelof is injured, Matteo Darmian is injured, Anthony Martial is injured and Diogo Dalot is injured. The only two players I could bring and didn't were David De Gea and Nemanja Matic," Mourinho told reporters.

United are currently five positions and 16 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool in the table.
