Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney voted for Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi to win the 2015 Ballon d'Or on Monday evening.
Messi claimed the trophy for a fifth time ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and club teammate Neymar, but Rooney did not select the latter in his top three.
Rooney selected Messi first and Ronaldo third, instead placing Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller in the middle of the duo, who have dominated the accolade in recent years.
Messi had previously won the Ballon d'Or between 2009 and 2012, but lost out to Ronaldo in both 2013 and 2014.
Ronaldo scored more goals than Messi in 2015, but while the Real Madrid forward did not claim any trophies, Messi helped his team win La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup.
