Nemanja Vidic confident of long-term fitness

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic insists that he is fit and raring to go this season, after being plagued by knee problems.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has insisted that he is finally free from injury ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Vidic has been plagued by persistent knee injuries in recent seasons, with a meniscus problem restricting him to 23 appearances in all competitions last season.

The Serbian defender missed United's pre-season tour of the Far East this summer with a sciatica issue, but has insisted that he now feels rested and ready to find top form for United once again.

He told The Guardian: "I had a few injuries, especially the knee injury. The sciatica was not a big problem but it was better for me to stay and train with the reserves.

"I've not had a pre-season for a couple of years and I was training really well with the reserves. I had two 90-minute games and I think I'm ready.

"I never like to make big promises but I believe I am fit. I am sure of how fit I am. I feel really good. Now it's all behind me, one and a-half years after my [first and more serious] operation and I'm ready to go."

United play their first league game under David Moyes this weekend, with a trip to face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening.
