Alan Shearer has admitted that it would be "desperately disappointing" for Newcastle United to suffer relegation from the Premier League.
The Magpies' fate will be decided on the final day of the season when they welcome West Ham United to St James' Park.
A win will keep the team in the top flight, but anything else could see them drop down to the Championship with Burnley and Queens Park Rangers.
"You have to say that their performances have been nowhere near good enough and no one can get away from that fact," former Newcastle captain Shearer told Sky Sports News.
"I know we keep on saying it, but the fans up here really do need something to shout about because it's their life; it's what they go to work for and it will be desperately disappointing if we get relegated on Sunday.
"It's been hard for them, they've had nothing to shout about for weeks now but they still come out in their thousands, still pay their money and they just want and crave something to shout about."
Newcastle head into the final weekend of the season having failed to win any of their last 10 matches.
