FIFA president Sepp Blatter admits that he will not resign but he is sorry for the remarks he made regarding how racism should be dealt with in football.

Sepp Blatter has apologised for his controversial comments regarding racism in football but has refused to step down as FIFA president.

The 75-year-old has come under fire after claiming that racial abuse on the pitch can be resolved with a handshake.

Due to the furore surrounding the comments, Blatter has apologised for causing any discontent but has stated that leaving his post would be "unfair".

"I can only say I am sorry for all those people affected by my declarations," Blatter told BBC Sport. "I cannot resign.

"It hurts and I'm still hurting over the serious incident. Why should I [resign]? When faced with a problem you have to face the problem.

"To leave would be totally unfair and incompatible with my fighting spirit, my character, my energy."

Prime Minister David Cameron had his say on the matter and branded Blatter's remarks as "appalling".
