Wayne Rooney: 'I could have done better for England in tournaments'

England captain Wayne Rooney admits that failing to make a major impact at an international tournament, with the exception of Euro 2004, is "disappointing".

England captain Wayne Rooney has spoken of his frustration at failing to make a major impact at an international tournament, with the exception of Euro 2004.

The then-teenage striker scored four goals in Portugal as the Three Lions made it to the quarter-finals of the competition, before being knocked out by the hosts.

Rooney is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "The first tournament [I played in] was great, even though it ended with injury, but the other ones have been disappointing.

"I feel I can do better than I have done and wanted to do better for the team but it hasn't happened."

Rooney is set to win his 100th England cap in Saturday evening's Euro 2016 clash against Slovenia.
