Mauricio Pellegrino: 'Burnley defeat is painful'

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino admits that his side's late defeat to Burnley was "painful" to take.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted that his side's 1-0 home defeat to Burnley this afternoon was "painful" to take.

A header from substitute Sam Vokes nine minutes from time was all that separated the two sides at St Mary's, where the Saints have now won just three of their last 12 Premier League games.

Pellegrino's side were three league games undefeated going into the encounter however and, speaking after the final whistle, the Argentine bemoaned losing out to the Clarets' "one chance" at goal.

"We did everything we had to do against an opponent that was defending 90% of the game," he told Match of the Day. "We were much better than them in all different aspects of the game apart from efficiency. They had one chance and scored. It is really painful for us, we did everything. The intensity and football was good, but we lost.

"I don't want to talk about luck. In this aspect we need to improve our accuracy. Today the spirit of the team and the attitude was really good.

"We had to use this game as a reference about how I would like my team to play. We deserved more.

"We have quality and capacity to keep playing in this way. We controlled the opponent totally in my view but in the respect of efficiency, Burnley were better than us."

Next up for the Saints after the international break is a tough trip to Liverpool on November 18.
