Danny Rose: 'England call-up came as a surprise'

Danny Rose admits that he was surprised to receive a call-up to the England squad on Thursday.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has claimed that he was surprised to receive a call-up to the England squad for the friendly with Norway and the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland.

Rose, one of four uncapped players included in Roy Hodgson's latest squad, revealed that Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino told him he could win a spot in the England side, but the 24-year-old did not expect to be in contention at this stage.

"I'm over the moon and it's a great achievement for me, especially considering where I started off from and where I'm at now," the left-back told the club's website.

"I've spoken to all my family and all my close friends and they're all thrilled. I don't think it will properly sink in for me, though, until after our game against Liverpool on Sunday when I'll be driving to meet up with everyone.

"The manager told me that he believed I could get an England call-up one day but I never thought it would come so soon."

Rose, who played 29 times for England Under-21s, has started both of Tottenham's Premier League fixtures this season.
