Ashley Cole is to be quizzed by the Los Angeles Police Department over claims that he assaulted a TV presenter in a nightclub.

The 33-year-old, who is currently on holiday with friends including Queens Park Rangers winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, was apparently involved in an incident while at the exclusive Toxic Day Party.

MTV presenter Donatella Panayiotou contacted police, claiming that Cole confronted her and poured champagne over her head and has also told officers that she was pushed during the bust-up, which she says ended with her throat piercing being ripped out. It has also been suggested that Panayiotou slapped Cole in the face during the row.

The television personality told the Sunday Mirror: "There was an incident and it is now in the hands of the police authorities following a formal complaint of assault against Ashley Cole."

Los Angeles police have confirmed that they have launched an investigation and would question Cole, who, if convicted, could face a penalty of up to six months in prison, community service, a maximum fine of $2,000 (£1,190) or probation for up to three years.
