British football clubs playing in European competitions to help refugees

British football clubs playing in the Champions League and Europa League will donate a portion of their ticket money to help refugees fleeing conflict.

British football clubs competing in the Champions League and Europa League will donate money to help refugees in the ongoing crisis.

The European Club Association has backed the campaign 90 Minutes for Hope, which will involve clubs donating one euro from each ticket sold for their first home match in their respective competitions.

Manchester United and Celtic have agreed to support the scheme, while English clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have been asked to get involved.

"We cannot close our eyes to the dramatic scenes currently taking place throughout Europe," said the ECA. "We, the European clubs, understand that our work goes well beyond what we achieve on the pitch and are naturally committed to engaging in social causes and giving back to society."

Thousands of refugees, the majority of whom are fleeing conflict in Syria, have been arriving in various European countries over the last few weeks.
