Andy Murray to auction off 'priceless' signed Fred Perry tennis ball

Andy Murray and his wife Kim put a unique tennis ball signed by the Scotsman and Fred Perry up for auction to raise money for charity.

Two-time Grand Slam tennis champion Andy Murray and his wife Kim are planning to put a unique signed tennis ball up for auction.

The ball contains Murray's autograph and that of Fred Perry, which makes the item the first piece of known memorabilia to have the signatures of the last two British men to win singles titles at Wimbledon.

According to Herald Scotland, many years ago, tennis fan Gail Sargeant passed on a set of three Perry-signed tennis balls, which the Scotsman then signed himself after winning Wimbledon in 2013.

The former US Open champion kept one of the balls to display in the home that he shares with Kim and he gave another to the Wimbledon museum.

Now, Murray and Kim have opted to put the third ball up for auction to raise money for the St Peter & St James Hospice, where Ms Sargeant received care before losing her battle with ovarian cancer in 2010.

"I am incredibly grateful to Gail for the gift she gave me all those years ago," Murray is quoted as saying. "It didn't seem right to just keep them hidden away. So many people are touched by cancer, so I'm really hoping we can raise a lot of money with this raffle."

Due to the uniqueness of the item, auctioneers have been unable to put a price on it.
