Ye Shiwen has won a gold medal for China in the women's 200m individual medley at London 2012.

The 16-year-old prodigy lagged behind Australian duo Steph Rice and Alicia Coutts for much of the race, but powered ahead on the freestyle leg and set a new Olympic record time of 2:07.57.

Coutts ended up in second and took silver with a time of 2:08.15, but Rice slipped out of the top three and lost the bronze to the United States' Caitlin Leverenz.

Great Britain's Hannah Miley had to settle with seventh in the world as her time of 2:11.29 was only enough to ward off Katinka Hosszu.

Ye's total of Olympic gold medals now stands at two.
