The USA have set a new world record to secure the gold medal in the 4x100m mixed freestyle medley at the World Swimming Championships in Russia.
The Americans were fifth after the first leg from Ryan Lochte, but Nathan Adrian swam the fastest split of the final in a time of 47.29 to move the United States up to second, before Simone Manuel put Missy Franklin in a position to take the lead on the anchor leg, finishing the race in a time of 3:23.05.
Russia led for much of the final, but a slow finish from Natalia Lovtcova saw the host nation slip to fourth in the closing stages.
Femke Heemskerk posted the fastest 100m by a woman in the final leg for the Netherlands to secure the silver medal for the Dutch team, who also completed the race inside the previous world record, while Canada secured the bronze.
Australia held the world record coming into this meeting, but withdrew from the event ahead of this morning's heats.
