Rafael Nadal has apologised to fans for his defeat to Stanislas Wawrinka in the Australian Open final.

The world number one battled through injury against the Swiss on Sunday before eventually losing in four sets.

"It's been an emotional two weeks," the Spaniard told reporters. "I'm sorry to finish this way. I tried very hard.

"I tried to finish the match for the crowd, for the opponent, for me."

Nadal was aiming to win the title for a second time following his previous triumph in 2009.
