Team GB's Johanna Konta marches into third round at Rio Olympics

Team GB star Johanna Konta earns a place in the third round of the women's singles at the Olympics in Rio with a straight-sets win over Caroline Garcia.

Team GB tennis star Johanna Konta has grabbed a place in the third round at the Olympic Games with a comfortable straight-sets win over Caroline Garcia in Rio de Janeiro.

The 25-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, sealed a 6-2 6-3 victory in just over one hour and a half.

Konta raced out of the blocks in the first set by going a break up at the first time of asking, and France's Garcia struggled to find a response.

Another break gave Konta a firm lead in the set, which she won in just 39 minutes, and even though Garcia battled to save three break points in her opening service game of the second set, she suffered a double break in her next two.

The 22-year-old showed some fighting spirit to break back, but Konta remained composed and saw out the match to progress into the next round of the women's singles.

Meanwhile, Team GB's Kyle Edmund was knocked out by Japan's Taro Daniel in the second round, while Andy Murray is awaiting his second-round match against Juan Monaco.
