Andy Murray: 'I didn't enjoy tennis during Wimbledon win'

Andy Murray admits that his long-term back injury meant that he didn't enjoy tennis in the summer of 2013, when he won the Wimbledon title.

Andy Murray has claimed that he wasn't enjoying tennis when he won the Wimbledon title two years ago.

The Scottish player ended Britain's 77-year wait for a home-grown winner in the men's singles with his straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic, but he has admitted that he was in pain due to a long-term back injury.

He told The Telegraph: "When I won Wimbledon, obviously it was great and that does make you happy. But a lot of the time I was playing I was in pain. So I wasn't actually enjoying practising and that. I wasn't hating tennis, and I don't know if resentful is the right word but, when I stepped on the court, it was causing me pain – and I wasn't actually enjoying that.

"Coming back from surgery I found hard as well. I thought at the time, you have the surgery and when you start again you might struggle for a little while but then your body would feel OK. For me it wasn't actually the case. My back still hurt and I was worried about that as well.

"But now, I love practising, love going in the gym, love training hard. For a while when I was having problems with my back, I wasn't enjoying it."

Murray opens his 2015 account against Mikhail Kukushkin on Tuesday.
