Heather Watson has become the first Briton through to the second round of Wimbledon after an impressive 6-2 6-1 win over Iveta Benesova on the opening day at SW19.
The British number three was given the opportunity to play on Centre Court and excelled in the spotlight as she claimed a straight sets victory over Benesova, who is ranked 48 places above her.
Watson secured an early break in the first and took that momentum to move a set ahead against her Czech opponent.
Some excellent baseline hitting helped Watson establish her advantage early in the second and a double break allowed her the chance to serve for the match.
She took the contest at the first attempt as Benesova pushed a backhand return long.
This is the first time Watson has advanced past the first stage at the All-England club and she will face American Jamie Hampton in the next round.
