Yulia Lipnitskaya of Russia becomes the youngest ever athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

Yulia Lipnitskaya of Russia has become the youngest ever athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

The 15-year-old accomplished the feat when she helped her country's figure skating team finish ahead of the USA in Sochi with his performance in the free skate.

The Yekaterinburg-born teenager is six days younger than figure skater Tara Lipinski, who won gold for the USA at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.

Lipnitskaya scored 141.51 in her individual event, ahead of American Gracie Gold's result of 129.38, which contributed to the host country securing their first gold at this year's Winter Games.

Russia is currently in joint-fourth place in the medal standings with one gold, two silvers and one bronze.
