Preview: Walsall vs. Swindon Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between Walsall and Swindon Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Both Walsall and Swindon Town will be looking to return to winning ways in League Two when they lock horns in the West Midlands on Tuesday night.

Walsall will enter the contest off the back of a 3-1 defeat at Stevenage on Saturday, while Swindon suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Carlisle United on the same afternoon.

Match preview

Walsall are in their fourth straight season in League Two following their relegation in 2019, and they have finished 12th, 19th and 16th in their last three campaigns in the fourth tier of English football.

Not too much was expected of the Saddlers this season in terms of pushing high up the division, so it is not a surprise to see them currently sitting down in 14th position in the table.

Michael Flynn's side have not actually been victorious in the league since New Year's Day, which is a run that stretches back 11 matches, drawing eight and losing three times in the process.

Walsall now have back-to-back home matches against Swindon and Gillingham, and they have been relatively strong in front of their own fans this season, claiming 27 points from 17 games, losing just four times.

The Saddlers have won their last two matches against Swindon, meanwhile, including a 2-1 victory in the reverse match earlier this season.

Swindon, meanwhile, finished sixth in League Two last season, which saw them qualify for the playoffs, but they were beaten on penalties by Port Vale in the semi-finals.

The Robins have been unable to show enough consistency to challenge for a top-seven spot at this stage, currently sitting down in 12th spot in the table on 49 points.

Jody Morris's side are seven points behind seventh-placed Salford City, so it is not impossible for them to challenge for the playoffs in the closing stages of the campaign, but they will enter this match off the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Carlisle on Saturday afternoon.

Swindon now have back-to-back away matches against Walsall and Rochdale before ending the month at home to Stockport County.

The Robins have picked up 23 points from their 17 away league games during the 2022-23 campaign, boasting a record of six wins, five draws and six defeats, but they have only netted 19 times on their travels.

Team News

Walsall boss Morris will need to check on the fitness of his players following Saturday's loss to Stevenage, but the home side did not appear to suffer any injury problems during the contest.

Flynn actually made four half-time alterations last time out, and two of those, Lewis Kinsella and Joseph Low, could now come into the first XI for this match.

There are unlikely to be any changes when it comes to the front two, though, with Douglas James-Taylor and Andrew Williams set to feature from the first whistle once again.

As for Swindon, head coach Morris could name the same side that started against Carlisle on Saturday.

The Robins were on the verge of claiming a point against the second-placed team in the division, only to concede in the sixth minute of added time, so it is unlikely that alterations will be made.

Charlie Austin has scored four times in nine League Two appearances this season, and the experienced forward will again start for Swindon on Tuesday night.

Walsall possible starting lineup:
Evans; White, Daniels, Monthe; Knowles, Kinsella, Cowley, Hutchinson, Low; Williams, James-Taylor

Swindon Town possible starting lineup:
Brynn; Hutton, Minturn, Brewitt, Clayton, Wakeling; Cain, Williams, McEachran; Austin, Hepburn-Murphy

We say: Walsall 1-1 Swindon Town

Walsall have been the draw specialists in recent weeks, sharing the points in seven of their last league matches, and we are expecting another stalemate here. Swindon need to win these type of games in order to push for the playoffs but could ultimately be left frustrated on Tuesday night.
