Brad Guzan has insisted that he will not become complacent, despite the fact that he is currently Aston Villa's number one goalkeeper.
The American international replaced Shay Given between the posts earlier in the season and has kept the gloves ever since.
However, the 28-year-old has admitted that he cannot afford to rest on his laurels because he could easily lose his place in the starting lineup.
"When you play consistent football you give yourself the chance and opportunity to get better and prove what you can bring to the table. Everyone needs a chance and opportunity," the Express & Star quotes him as saying.
"Fortunately for me I was given that chance and opportunity earlier in the season and when you are, you have to take it. For me I continue to try to prove week in week out to justify the selection and try to improve to help the team and yourself.
"It is about continual learning to get better. You can't get complacent with where you are at because there is always someone creeping up behind you."
Guzan joined Villa in 2008 from MLS side Chivas USA.
