Atletico Madrid come from behind to beat Eibar

Jose Gimenez, Saul Niguez and Fernando Torres score the goals as Atletico Madrid come from one goal behind to beat Eibar 3-1 in their La Liga clash in Madrid.

Atletico Madrid came from one goal behind to beat Eibar 3-1 in Saturday's La Liga clash at the Vicente Calderon.

Keko sent the visitors ahead early in the second period, but headers from Jose Gimenez and Saul Niguez completed the turnaround for Atletico, who remain second in the La Liga table.

There was time for one more goal in stoppage time, however, and it was a special occasion for Fernando Torres, who came off the bench to score his 100th goal for the Spanish outfit.

Atletico entered the match without three members of their regular back four due to suspensions for Juanfran, Diego Godin and Filipe Luis, while Augusto Fernandez missed out through injury, leaving Diego Simeone short of options.

Indeed, there was a start at centre-back for Saul, while young French defender Lucas Hernandez featured at left-back for a team that had failed to win in their last four games in all competitions.

The home side had a strong shout for a penalty in the 15th minute when Angel Correa went down in the box under a challenge from Ander Capa, but the referee was not interested.

Antoine Griezmann had the first real chance of the match in the 19th minute after a pass from Jesus Gamez, but the French international's strike was always rising over the crossbar.

Eibar's first opportunity of note came five minutes later when Mauro dos Santos met a corner from the left, but the centre-back's header dropped wide of the post, before Gabi struck wide down the other end.

Both sides struggled for clear-cut chances in the latter stages of the first period, with a long-range strike from Correa and poked effort from Eibar's Jota just about the closest either came before the referee brought the opening half of action to a close.

Eibar were ahead barely two minutes into the second period, however, when Sergi Enrich took advantage of a slip from Saul before squaring for former Atletico attacker Keko, who placed his effort beyond the reach of Jan Oblak.

The response from Atletico was strong, with Saul and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco both coming close to levelling the scores, but it was Gimenez's close-range header from a Koke corner that tied the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute.

Atletico then had their second in the 63rd minute when Saul, who was at fault for Eibar's opener, rose highest inside the box to head a Koke corner past Asier Riesgo.

Carrasco came close to a third for the home side 20 minutes from time, but the Belgian's curling effort was just wide of the post.

Atletico should have had a third in the 76th minute when Luciano Vietto swept home a low cross from Jesus Gamez, but the linesman's flag was raised, despite replays showing that it should have been given.

Fernando Torres was next to come close for the dominant hosts, but the striker could only poke wide of the post under pressure from Riesgo. There was still time for the Spaniard, however, as he converted a Vietto cross in stoppage time to make it a century of goals for the capital club.
