Etheridge: 'We have to be happy with point'

Penalty hero Neil Etheridge admits that he is "happy" to have claimed a point from Cardiff City's first home match of the season against Newcastle United.

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has suggested that his side are content with a point from their opening home Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.

The Bluebirds had the better of things in South Wales and played the final 25 minutes with an extra man after substitute Isaac Hayden was dismissed.

Newcastle could have snatched all three points in the fifth minute of added time, though, as referee Craig Pawson adjudged that Sean Morrison handled the ball inside the box.

Kenedy, who endured a nightmare afternoon at the Cardiff City Stadium, could not convert past Etheridge and the Bluebirds claimed their first point back in the big time.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the goalless draw, Etheridge said: "We could have won it, but with a penalty in the last minute I will take a point and be happy to move onto next week.

"We don't want that to become a regular occurrence [conceding and saving a penalty], but we deserved at least a point. We knew we would have a chance at home and needed to get points on the board.

"It is not easy to step up in the 90th minute and take a penalty, but today I came out victorious."

Etheridge also kept out Callum Wilson's spot kick in last week's 2-0 loss at Bournemouth.
