Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Charlton Athletic will attempt to end a nine-game winless run in all competitons when they play host to Peterborough United in Saturday's League One contest.

In contrast to their opponents, promotion-chasing Peterborough will be looking to extend their unbeaten league run to 10 matches.

Charlton boss Michael Appleton is under pressure to spark an upturn in fortunes, having seen his side fail to win their last nine competitive matches since beating Cheltenham Town at the end of November.

The Addicks spurned the chance to end that poor run of form in last Saturday's away trip to Vale Park, where they gave up the lead on three occasions to draw with Port Vale.

Having won seven, drawn nine and lost nine of their 25 league games, Charlton occupy a mid-table position with 13 points separating them from the playoffs, while they are seven points clear of the drop zone.

Not only will they be keen to end their winless run, but the Addicks will also be desperate to claim their first league clean sheet since October.

The hosts will head into the weekend with aspirations of beating Peterborough for the first time since August 2015, having failed to win any of their last 11 head-to-head meetings (W7, D4).

Peterborough, meanwhile, will be looking for a positive response after they fell to a 3-0 defeat in their FA Cup third-round clash with Leeds United.

They were expected to be in action in midweek, but their EFL Trophy fixture against Crawley Town was postponed due to a frozen pitch, giving Posh a full week's rest before they turn their focus back to their promotion push.

After fighting back from 2-1 down to beat Derby in their most recent league outing, Darren Ferguson's side currently sit in third position and just two points adrift of second-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Having racked up 50 league goals in the 2023-24 campaign, Peterborough are currently the leading scorers in the third tier, highlighting one of the key factors behind their success this term.

They will be hoping to put their firepower to good use at The Valley, where they will have the chance to complete a league double over Charlton after recording a narrow 1-0 victory earlier in the season.

Team News

The Addicks are unable to call upon Terry Taylor, Panutche Camara, Harry Isted, Conor McGrandles, Chuks Aneke and Miles Leaburn.

Forward Alfie May and midfielder Chem Campbell are regarded as doubts due to back and ankle problems respectively.

Lewis Fiorini and Tyreeq Bakinson have recently joined on loan from Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday, and the latter could be brought into the lineup to make his debut against Peterborough.

As for the visitors, the goalkeeping duo of Nicholas Bilokapic and Will Blackmore remain sidelined through injury.

Jonson Clarke-Harris is also a fitness concern ahead of the weekend after he missed the FA Cup defeat to Leeds with a calf problem.

Despite seeing his side knocked out of the FA Cup, Ferguson could select the same lineup that started the third-round tie.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; T. Watson, Hector, Jones, Edun; Bakinson, Dobson, Anderson; T. Campbell, Blackett-Taylor, Kanu

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Talley; Katongo, Knight, Edwards, Burrows; Collins, Kyprianou; Poku, Randall, Mason-Clark; Jones

SM words green background

We say: Charlton Athletic 1-2 Peterborough United

Peterborough have won each of their last three away league games, and we think that they will continue that run against a Charlton team that will be low on confidence following a poor spell of form.
