Chelsea reportedly turned down Rennes' request to include Olivier Giroud as part of the deal to bring Edouard Mendy to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Mendy is understood to be on the verge of completing his switch to West London in order to provide further competition for current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £25m deal for the 28-year-old, but L'Equipe claims that Rennes' initial demands would have seen Giroud move in the opposite direction.
The Ligue 1 outfit wanted the French striker on loan for the 2020-21 season, in addition to a £37m fee.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard appeared to distance the club from the imminent arrival of Mendy following Monday's 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, but the deal is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming days.
Mendy was left out of Rennes' 4-2 win over Nimes on Sunday.
