Sven-Goran Eriksson tips England failure at World Cup

Sven-Goran Eriksson says that England could win the 2018 World Cup in Russia but has played down their chances of success in Brazil.

Sven-Goran Eriksson is certain that England will fail to win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but feels that they have a chance of succeeding for the first time since 1966 in Russia four years later.

The Three Lions earned their place at the tournament last month after winning their qualifying group, but will go into the draw in the second pot of seeds due to their place in the FIFA world rankings.

Eriksson, who guided England to the quarter-finals of the competition in 2002 and 2006, thinks that they will struggle in South America next year.

"I don't believe they can win the World Cup in Brazil," Eriksson told BBC Sport. "There are a lot of young players coming in. Maybe in Russia.

"I think it's easier to win it there than in Brazil. For a European team to win in South America is not easy.

"Expectation does not seem to be what it was in the past and I think that's very good for the team. The quarter-finals would be very good. It is time for a semi-final or final."

The draw for the group stages of the World Cup takes place on December 6.
