Leeds United insist club not for sale following Russell Crowe takeover rumours

Leeds United insist that the club is not for sale following reports that actor Russell Crowe is considering purchasing the Championship outfit.

Leeds United chairman Andrew Umbers has insisted that the club is not welcoming any takeover offers, following rumours that Hollywood actor Russell Crowe is considering a bid.

The 50-year-old asked his Twitter followers if it would be a "good idea" to buy the Championship outfit after one fan made the request on social media.

The club's current owner Massimo Cellino is embroiled in an ownership dispute with the Football League after the Italian was disqualified following tax evasion charges.

However, Umbers has told BBC Sport: "The club is not for sale, nor do the Cellino family wish to sell and nor have we received any approaches contrary to reports.

"The ongoing legal discussions between Massimo Cellino and the Football League are being completely misinterpreted. Leeds United is currently being successfully restructured, rebuilt, significantly invested in, with care and planning for the longer term with the Cellino family at its heart, for the benefit of its long-suffering and passionate fans, the city and its players and staff."

In the league, Leeds are currently 14th in the table.
