Analysing Burnley's Premier League run-in

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the fixtures Burnley will have to play if the 2019-20 Premier League season resumes.

A seven-match unbeaten run prior to the coronavirus-enforced shutdown had Burnley down as outside contenders for a European spot.

Manchester City's looming domestic ban has left the door wide open, meaning that the side finishing in eighth may qualify for the Europa League playoffs.

Given the Clarets are only two points behind eighth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, Sean Dyche will be hoping that the season gets the green light to resume.

If that is the case there will be plenty still to play for at Turf Moor over the remaining nine gameweeks.

With that in mind, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at Burnley's run-in.

Whether the fixtures will be played out in the order that they were originally scheduled is something that Premier League chiefs will have to discuss should 2019-20 indeed be played out to its conclusion.

Burnley were due to travel to reigning champions Manchester City in their next match on March 14 - a fixture history suggests would not have gone the visitors' way.

City have got the better of the Clarets in their last five games in all competitions, scoring 19 and conceding just two.

Dyche's charges also still have to travel to champions-in-waiting Liverpool in what is a tough away schedule.

In fact, the average position of Burnley's five remaining away opponents is 10th, compared to 11-12th for their four home games.

It is arguably at Turf Moor where the Lancashire outfit's European feat could be decided, though, given that they face Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers - seventh and sixth respectively - there in the final third of the season.

A return of 23 points from 15 matches at Turf Moor this season places them 10th in the Premier League home form table, matching their position in terms of away results only.

Burnley took one point from the two reverse fixtures against Sheffield United and Wolves earlier in the season, while overall they collected 11 points from a possible 27 against the sides that they still have left to face.

A repeat of those results would give them a total of 50 points, which would have been enough for eighth place in two of the last three seasons.
