Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles should have been sent off in Saturday's clash with Liverpool.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has acknowledged that Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles should have been given a red card against Liverpool.

During the closing stages of the game at Anfield, Lascelles brought down Mohamed Salah as the Egyptian was about to move into the penalty area, only for referee Graham Scott to wave away appeals from Salah and a furious Jurgen Klopp.

However, Gallagher has said that the referee got the decision wrong, with the centre-back being fortunate to avoid being dismissed for the Magpies.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "Wrong decision. The only decision here is: is it a foul? And if it is a foul, it's a red card. And yes, I do think it is a foul.

"The player clearly hasn't gone to play the ball. The trajectory of the ball, where Salah takes a touch, may have thrown the referee off slightly."

Liverpool claimed a 2-0 victory on Merseyside.
