However, according to the Daily Star, Manuel Pellegrini will be backed once again this summer as he looks to bolster his squad.
Liverpool star Sterling, who has been heavily tipped with a move away from Anfield, is said to be top of the wishlist, while City could also deal the Reds another blow by landing one of their own targets in the form of Burnley forward Ings.
City signed Wilfried Bony from Swansea City in January, but the Ivory Coast international has failed to hit the mark in the early months of his Etihad career.
