The home side were quick off the starting blocks, knowing that an early goal would go a long way towards getting the point needed to clinch the title.

The first chance of the game fell to Manuel Pellegrini's side, David Silva lashing his volley wildly over the crossbar in the 12th minute, while shortly after, Sergio Aguero attempted a long range effort, but opposition keeper Adrian did well to save at the first attempt.

Midway through the first half, City left-back Aleksandr Kolarov was next to test the Hammers stopper, but the Spaniard was able to tip the ball onto the crossbar.

With just six minutes left to play before the interval, another long-range effort, this time from Samir Nasri, managed to breach the away side's clean sheet, the Frenchman's shot hitting the post and nestling into the bottom corner.

Vincent Kompany then eased nerves for the home fans when he doubled the Citizens' lead not long after the restart, the captain prodding home from close range following a poor Hammers clearance.

With the mood at the Etihad growing increasingly jovial, the City players played with increased vigour, with Nasri driving the ball from 18 yards out and Aguero failing to connect from close range midway through the second half.

Eventually the full time whistle blew on the game and on the season, ensuring that Pellegrini's men would be lifting the Premier League trophy in 2014.
