Manchester City reportedly opted against signing Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis earlier in the summer transfer window.
With Fernandinho now 34 years of age, City manager Pep Guardiola had made it a priority to bring in a new defensive midfielder ahead of the new campaign.
Guardiola eventually opted to sign Rodri from Atletico Madrid, but it has been suggested that as many as five different players were on his radar.
According to A Bola, Luis was on that shortlist having established himself as one of European football's top prospects at Benfica.
However, Benfica's move to increase the 20-year-old's release clause to €120m (£109.68m) put off any admirers of the youngster until future transfer windows.
