Manchester United defender Phil Jones will reportedly learn the extent of his back injury following a scan this week.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is reportedly due to undergo scans on a back problem this week.

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently suggested that the former Blackburn Rovers player could miss the start of the season with a muscle injury.

It is understood that the 20-year-old has been feeling high levels of discomfort and will need to have a scan to determine the root of the problem, according to Goal.com.

The former Premier League champions are also expected to be without Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans for the start of the new campaign, which begins for United on August 20 with an away trip to Everton.
