Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has backed Robin van Persie for success at the club.

It was confirmed earlier today that the Dutch international is bound for Old Trafford, where Pallister believes he will form a successful partnership with Wayne Rooney.

"Signing a player with the quality of Van Persie can only improve your attacking threat," he told BBC Sport.

"From a defensive point of view, having to contend with Rooney and Van Persie is the kind of thing that will give centre-halves nightmares.

"Both are top-class players, both have done it at the very-highest level and as a pair, they have also the makings of a terrific partnership."

United were involved in a battle for Van Persie's signature with local rivals Manchester City, but have now reached an agreement with Arsenal for the 29-year-old.
