Phil Jones reportedly turned down the prospect of a testimonial due to being aware of his lack of popularity among Manchester United supporters.
The Englishman, who joined United in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers, has only made one Premier League start this season.
That particular start came in Sunday's 3-3 draw with Sheffield United, during which the defender was criticised for losing possession in the build up to the home side's opening goal.
According to The Athletic, Jones was offered the prospect of a testimonial in 2021 as part of a contract extension signed in February, but the player turned it down.
Jones is claimed to have said that, due to his decreased popularity among United fans, 'only his mother and father would turn up' for the event.
The 27-year-old was once earmarked by Sir Alex Ferguson as a player who could one day captain United and England.
