Louis van Gaal: 'Paddy McNair lacked confidence'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal reveals that he withdrew Paddy McNair against Southampton at half time because he felt the defender lacked confidence.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that he substituted defender Paddy McNair at half time against Southampton because he felt the youngster had lost confidence.

The 19-year-old made several errors in the first half against the Saints, which could have been costly for the Red Devils on another day as they managed to edge out Ronald Koeman's men in a 2-1 victory.

Van Gaal told reporters: "[McNair] had no confidence, he had given three chances away. It's very disappointing for me and for Paddy, but I had to because as a manager I am responsible.

"It's tough but it's also in his best interests. I have made a lot of changes and all the boys can survive. It is only one match, one moment in a lifetime."

United moved up to third in the Premier League with their win over the Saints.
