Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly contemplating whether to make an approach for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong as a potential transfer target.

The 21-year-old is no stranger to British shores having spent time on the books of Manchester City and Celtic.

Despite having failed to make a first-team outing for City, Frimpong moved North of the border and starred for the Scottish giants, contributing three goals and eight assists from his 51 appearances.

However, the Dutchman has only improved since making the switch to Leverkusen in January 2021, chipping in with seven goals and 12 assists from 64 outings in all competitions.

With a contract until 2025, Frimpong is tied to the German outfit in the long term, but their struggles and potential lack of European football in 2023-24 may lead to at least one star name being sold.

According to Football Transfers, United are monitoring the situation ahead of possible making a move for the ex-City youngster.

Diogo Dalot is now the established first choice at right-back, the Portugal international making a total of 17 starts in the Premier League and Europa League this season.

In sharp contrast, backup Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been limited to just four minutes of top-flight football, and there is every expectation that United will try to move on the 24-year-old as soon as possible.

The report suggests that United head coach Erik ten Hag views compatriot Frimpong as the ideal player to strengthen his options in that position.

Nevertheless, it is claimed that Chelsea are also admirers of Frimpong and may be willing to put forward a proposal during one of the next two transfer windows.

As it stands, the Blues have Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta as options at right wing-back, but injury issues for the former and the age of the latter means that alternatives are being assessed.

Christian Pulisic has been used there in the last two fixtures with contrasting results, the American making a positive impact against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League before being exposed during the 4-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion four days later.

Recently, a report claimed that the Chelsea hierarchy had included Wolverhampton Wanderers' Nelson Semedo on a shortlist of options.
