Nigeria manager Stephen Keshi confirms that Shola Ameobi could be part of his Africa Cup of Nations squad in January.

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi could be called up by Nigeria for next year's Africa Cup of Nations, according to Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi.

Ameobi was born in Nigeria and remains eligible to play for the African giants despite representing England at youth level.

Nigeria booked their place in the tournament in South Africa next January with a resounding 6-1 victory over Liberia last weekend.

Keshi told Sky Sports News: "Shola is a good striker and he has a chance to be on the plane to South Africa.

"I've been watching him closely and he's got something unique. He will definitely bring something different to the attack.

"I have Shola and Victor Anichebe in my striking plans. I will give them a chance to fight for a place alongside other strikers."

Magpies boss Alan Pardew may lose Ameobi in January but he will be able to call on Senegalese duo Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba after Senegal were eliminated by the Ivory Coast in controversial circumstances on Saturday.
